U.S. tort system expensive
According to the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, excessive lawsuits in 2002 cost every American $809. This is based on a December 2003 study by Tillinghast Towers Perrin which estimated the cost of the U.S. tort system to be $233 billion in 2002.
The institute has ranked the "Best to Worst State Legal Systems." The five best states are Delaware, Nebraska, Virginia, Iowa and Idaho. The 11 worst are South Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas, Montana, Illinois, Texas, California, Louisiana, Alabama, West Virginia and Mississippi.
